Bonefishing

Bonefish — also known as the Grey Ghost of the Flats — are one of our favorite species to target in the Florida Keys and Key West. Found in very shallow water, bonefish offer some of the best sight-fishing opportunities anywhere. They’re known for their drag-screaming, lightning-fast runs and their eagerness to eat a well-placed fly or lure.

Not long ago, bonefish numbers were dangerously low in the Keys. But thanks to major conservation efforts throughout the Florida Keys and many Caribbean nations, the population has made a strong comeback. In recent years, the Lower Keys have seen a dramatic increase in both bonefish numbers and average size. Many guides and anglers believe the big bonefish are officially back.

We’re able to target bonefish year-round in Key West and the Lower Keys, but certain conditions consistently make for better fishing. Prime bonefish fishing typically occurs in the spring, summer, and fall.

Bonefish are an excellent target for anglers looking to test their skills. They’re extremely aware of their surroundings — constantly evading sharks and barracuda — and will creep onto shallow flats at lower tide stages in search of crabs and shrimp. We often find them tailing on grass flats or prowling sandy edges for food.

Why Bonefish Are the Perfect Flats Species

Bonefish combine everything flats anglers love: visual shots, technical casting, challenging fish behavior, and high-speed runs once hooked. Every encounter is a learning moment — and every successful connection feels earned.

They reward patience, sharp eyesight, and quiet movement. If you’re looking to improve your sight-fishing skills, bonefish are the ultimate teacher.

Where We Target Bonefish in the Lower Keys

Depending on light, tide, and weather, we may fish:

  • Bright white sand flats for high-visibility shots
  • Oceanside turtle grass flats with tailing fish
  • Shallow shorelines where bonefish push with the tides
  • Sandy coves and pockets during fall high tides
  • Backcountry shallows on calm mornings

Each flat behaves differently depending on tidal height, cloud cover, and wind speed. Understanding these variables is a huge part of consistently finding fish.

What to Expect on a Bonefish Trip

Most bonefishing involves:

  • Spotting subtle movement or nervous water
  • Casting quickly and accurately
  • Adjusting fly placement based on fish direction
  • Staying quiet and patient
  • Fighting fish with steady pressure to avoid sharks

Bonefish require precision. They’ll refuse a fly if it’s too close, too far, too loud, or moving unnaturally. But when everything lines up, the reward is unbeatable — a blistering run across a shallow flat.

Bonefish trips also offer a great opportunity to sharpen your ability to:

  • Read tides
  • See fish in low contrast
  • Control line in wind
  • Make accurate 30–60 foot shots

Tackle & Flies Used for Bonefish

For bonefish, we typically use:

  • 7–8wt fly rods
  • Floating lines with long, tapered leaders
  • Shrimp and small crab patterns
  • Light tippets for spooky fish

Spin anglers can also target bonefish using:

  • Small jigs
  • Light shrimp artificials
  • Soft plastics
  • Live shrimp (upon request)

All gear is provided if you don’t want to bring your own.

Best Seasons & Conditions

Bonefish can be caught year-round, but the best conditions tend to be:

  • Spring: Warm temps + stable tides
  • Summer: Excellent sight fishing and large schools
  • Fall: Bigger fish and consistent morning tides

Ideal bonefish conditions include:

  • Light to moderate wind
  • Good sunlight
  • Warm water
  • Incoming tides

Cloud cover and high winds can make spotting fish more difficult, but we’ll adjust spots and strategy accordingly.
